Kano State is mourning the death of Aishatu Umar, a mother of five, whose demise was due to alleged medical negligence at the state-owned Abubakar Imam Urology Centre.
A relative, Abubakar Mohammed, said Aishatu endured months of severe abdominal pain after undergoing surgery at the facility about four months ago. He explained that doctors performed the operation in September, but her condition deteriorated afterwards.
According to him, despite repeated visits to the hospital, medical staff allegedly limited treatment to painkillers and failed to conduct further tests. It was only recently, he said, that doctors carried out scans and discovered that a pair of scissors had allegedly been left inside her body during the initial surgery.

“She had the operation in September and complained of serious abdominal pain for months,” Mohammed said. “Each time she returned to the hospital, they only gave her painkillers.”
He added that doctors planned a corrective surgery after discovering the object, but Aishatu died before it could take place.
Mohammed described the incident as gross negligence and called on the Kano State Government and relevant health authorities to investigate the matter thoroughly and ensure justice.
“How can medical professionals leave scissors inside a patient’s body? This is unacceptable and undermines confidence in the health sector,” he said.
Reacting to the incident, the Kano State Hospitals Management Board announced that it had launched an immediate and comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding Aishatu’s death.
In a statement issued through its Public Relations Officer, Samira Suleiman, the board’s Executive Secretary, Dr Mansur Mudi Nagoda, assured the public that the probe would be transparent, impartial and professional.
The board said it would not overlook the case and promised to take appropriate action if investigators confirm negligence.
The incident has sparked public concern and renewed calls for stronger accountability and improved patient safety in public healthcare facilities across Kano State.
