Manchester City have reached a preliminary agreement to sign Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi during the January transfer window. The Premier League champions moved quickly for the England international centre-back after defensive injury problems involving Josko Gvardiol and Ruben Dias.
Discussions between City and Palace have accelerated over the last 24 hours, with confidence growing that the transfer will be completed before the window closes.
Guehi, 25, is due to be out of contract in the summer and has drawn interest from several leading European clubs. He was close to sealing a move to Liverpool last summer, but the proposed £35 million transfer collapsed late on deadline day after he had already started his medical.
Although personal terms with Manchester City are yet to be fully agreed, sources suggest there are no major obstacles, with the defender expected to commit to a long-term deal at the Etihad Stadium.
Earlier reports indicated City were monitoring Guehi’s situation, and talks have since gathered momentum.
Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner, however, confirmed that negotiations were close to being finalised.
“My understanding is the deal with Marc is in the final stages,” the Austrian said, adding that Guehi will not feature in Palace’s Premier League match against Sunderland on Saturday. Glasner had earlier stated that the club would be open to selling the defender in January if their valuation was met.
Guehi captained Palace to FA Cup success last season, lifting the trophy after a final victory over Manchester City. He also led the Eagles to a Community Shield triumph over Liverpool at the start of the current campaign.
Manchester City have already added Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth this month in a £62.5 million deal, and Guehi’s arrival would further strengthen Pep Guardiola’s defensive options.
