A migrant boat carrying more than 50 people sank off the Greek coast, resulting in the deaths of a woman and a boy, with three others still reported missing, the Greek coastguard said on Sunday.

Authorities reported that 50 migrants had been rescued and were receiving care following the incident near the island of Ikaria in the northern Aegean Sea.

A coastguard spokeswoman added that a rescue operation was ongoing, with additional diving teams expected to arrive later in the day.

Rescue efforts were being hampered by strong winds, according to public broadcaster ERT.

Ikaria is located close to Turkey’s western coast, a common departure point for migrants attempting to reach the European Union.

Some also take the longer and more dangerous route from Libya to Crete in southern Greece.

The crossings remain highly perilous. In early December, a boat off Crete sank, leaving 17 people dead, 15 missing, and only two survivors.

The UN refugee agency reported that 107 people either died or went missing off the Greek coast in 2025.

The International Organisation for Migration estimates that around 33,000 migrants have died or gone missing in the Mediterranean since 2014.
