At least 11 people were killed and 12 others injured in a shooting at a soccer field in the central Mexican state of Guanajuato, local authorities said on Sunday.

The attack took place in a neighbourhood in the city of Salamanca, according to a statement from the mayor’s office, which said security forces launched an operation to locate those responsible.

Authorities said 10 victims died at the scene, while another person later died after being taken to a hospital. It added that “12 people were injured by gunfire and are receiving medical attention.”

Local officials also reported that four bags containing human remains were discovered late Saturday in the same city.

Guanajuato is one of Mexico’s most important industrial centres and a destination for both domestic and foreign tourists. According to official data, it has also seen the highest number of homicides in the country in recent years, primarily due to conflicts between organised crime groups.

President Claudia Sheinbaum said earlier this year that Mexico’s homicide rate in 2025 had fallen to its lowest level in a decade, attributing the decline to her administration’s national security strategy.

Preliminary data show that homicides in Mexico decreased by nearly 40% in December compared to the last month of Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s presidency.
