A US aircraft carrier strike group, led by the USS Abraham Lincoln, and several supporting warships have arrived in the Middle East, heightening fears of a potential attack on Iran. Central Command confirmed the deployment, saying the ships are in the region to promote security and stability.

President Donald Trump recently signaled a “massive fleet” was being sent “just in case,” even as he has not ruled out military action. The move follows rising tensions after a crackdown on protests in Iran, and comes after past US escalations in the region.

Iran has warned that any attack would be met with a comprehensive response, with Tehran accusing protesters’ demonstrations of being co-opted by foreign interests.

The UAE meanwhile, said it will not permit its airspace or waters to be used for hostile actions against Iran. Hezbollah’s leader warned that any strike on Iran would invite a regional escalation.

The Lincoln’s carrier group, along with additional fighters and air-defense assets, has been deployed from the Asia-Pacific region. The US military also announced an exercise in the region to demonstrate combat airpower deployment and sustainment.
