The United States has strongly condemned the mass killing in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State on Thursday, in which the Nigerian police authorities said 75 people died in the attack on Woro and Nuku communities.
The US Mission in Nigeria, in a statement issued Friday via X(formerly Twitter), said more than 160 people were believed to have been killed, with several others still missing. The mission described the assault as a horrific act of violence and conveyed sympathy to families who lost loved ones.
“The United States condemns the horrific attack in Kwara state in Nigeria, which claimed the lives of more than 160 people, with the death toll still unconfirmed and many still unaccounted for.
“We express our deepest condolences to the families of those affected by this senseless violence,” the statement read.

Washington also voiced support for Nigerian President Bola Tinubu’s decision to reinforce security in the affected communities. It said it welcomed his directive to deploy security personnel to safeguard villages and his instruction that federal and state authorities provide relief while pursuing accountability for those responsible.
The latest response adds to mounting international condemnation of the attack, which has already drawn condemnation from the United Nations and the Republic of Türkiye.
The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, ordered specialised tactical and intelligence teams to move into Kaiama and adjoining communities to stabilise the situation and forestall further attacks.
Meanwhile, Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq said troops operating under Operation Savannah Shield had been mobilised, expressing confidence that the strengthened security presence would help prevent renewed violence.
