The Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen. Waidi Shaibu, has approved the immediate deployment of a special forces intervention battalion to Plateau State following a resurgence of violent attacks, the Nigerian Army has said.

The spokesperson for the Nigerian army, Capt. Chinonso Polycarp Oteh, announced the deployment in a statement on Monday.

The soldiers, who are from the Chief of Army Staff Intervention Battalion, have already reached the state, according to Oteh, and are expected to carry out protracted offensive operations against terrorist elements.

The troops were received at the 3 Division Headquarters by Maj. Gen. Folusho Oyinlola, the General Officer Commanding 3 Division and the Commander of Joint Task Force Operation Enduring Peace.

Oyinlola appreciated the COAS’s proactive leadership in providing the necessary combat enablers and other logistics requirements to effectively fulfil the troops’ mandate.

He also appealed to the citizens of the state not to panic upon seeing large numbers of troops in motion and other heavy military equipment.

He appreciated their continued support for the military and called for greater support in providing actionable, timely intelligence on the whereabouts of criminal elements to aid troops’ operations and lead to the desired peace in the state.
