The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has denied reports claiming that the Nigerian Government directed it to suspend enforcement actions concerning the regulation of sachet alcohol and 200ml PET bottle alcoholic products.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the agency dismissed the publication as inaccurate and misleading, maintaining that it has not received any official directive from the Nigerian Government instructing it to stop its regulatory activities.

The report cited a statement released in Abuja by the Special Adviser on Public Affairs to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Terrence Kuanum, claiming that the government ordered NAFDAC to suspend enforcement related to the proposed alcohol ban.

However, NAFDAC’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, clarified that the agency continues to operate strictly within its statutory mandate and in accordance with duly communicated government policies. She said the publication does not reflect any official communication received by the agency and stressed that NAFDAC has not been formally instructed to suspend its regulatory or enforcement actions regarding sachet alcohol products.

“The said publication is false, misleading, and does not reflect any official communication received by the Agency from the Federal Government.

“At no time has the Agency received any formal directive ordering the suspension of its regulatory or enforcement activities in respect of sachet alcohol products,” Adeyeye said.

Adeyeye reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to protecting public health, ensuring regulatory compliance, and carrying out its responsibilities transparently and in accordance with established laws and due process.

She noted that any decision affecting national regulatory actions would be communicated through proper government channels. She urged the public, industry stakeholders and the media to disregard the report and rely only on verified information issued through NAFDAC’s official platforms and authorised government communication outlets.

The agency also warned against spreading unverified information that could trigger unnecessary public anxiety, create economic uncertainty or distort government policy.

NAFDAC maintained that it remains focused on safeguarding public health, promoting economic stability and protecting national interest.
