President Bola Tinubu has directed the Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, to prioritise restoring peace and strengthening security across the country.
In a statement signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information & Strategy, the President gave the charge on Wednesday at the State House in Abuja during the decoration of Disu as acting IGP, following the retirement of Kayode Egbetokun.
Disu’s appointment remains subject to ratification by the Nigeria Police Council and confirmation by the Senate, with the council expected to meet next week.
Tinubu said Disu’s track record informed his decision, recalling his performance during his time in Lagos. He described the appointment as coming at a critical period and urged the new police chief to rebuild public trust in law enforcement.
The President emphasised the need for firm but fair leadership, stressing professionalism within the force and protecting lives and property as top priorities. He assured Disu of full presidential backing in tackling the country’s security challenges.

“Lead firmly but fairly, demand professionalism at every level and ensure that the safety of lives and property remains our highest priority. It’s a daunting challenge. I know you can do it. You have my word, you have my full support,” the President said.
He noted that Nigeria continues to grapple with banditry, terrorism and other forms of criminality, urging the acting IGP to bring innovation and strategic thinking to the fight against insecurity.
“Nigeria is challenged with banditry, terrorism and other criminal activities. You will be part of the thinking and innovation to overcome them.”
Tinubu also expressed confidence in Disu’s leadership capacity, citing his discipline and operational experience, and called on him to advance the administration’s security objectives under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
Paying tribute to the former IGP, Egbetokun, the President commended his service to the nation and encouraged him to support his successor with guidance where necessary. He further called on security stakeholders to collaborate closely in safeguarding lives and property.
