Nigerian Military Rescues 15 NYSC Members In Kogi

The Nigerian military has rescued 15 NYSC members, including 21 kidnapped victims, from a forest in Kogi State.

Defence Media Operations Director, Maj. Gen. Michael Onoja, announced the rescue on Monday, saying the victims were found within the Egume-Ochaja forest.

The rescued victims comprised eight males and 13 females, with the 15 NYSC members among those abducted while travelling from Abuja to Bayelsa State.

“The Armed Forces of Nigeria is also happy to announce that a total of 21 victims, comprising eight males and 13 females, 15 of them being National Youth Service Corps members, have just been rescued,” Onoja said.

The military said the rescue came during intensified operations against terrorists and criminal groups across the country.

Onoja also assured residents of Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State that operations would continue to rescue victims abducted in the area.

He cited the August 5 rescue of 308 abducted persons from Kainji Lake National Park as evidence of the military’s growing capacity to locate and rescue victims.

“The Armed Forces, therefore, reassures the people of Borgu and their communities that military operations against terrorists and criminals will be sustained,” he said.

Onoja urged families of abducted persons to remain calm and provide credible information without taking actions that could compromise rescue operations.

He said the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, remained committed to rescuing victims, protecting civilians and helping displaced residents return home.

Giving an update on August operations, Onoja said troops neutralised more than 332 terrorists and criminals, arrested 373 suspects and rescued 610 kidnapped victims.

He added that 201 terrorists surrendered, while troops recovered 88 arms and 2,077 rounds of ammunition.

The military also recovered 686,800 litres of stolen crude oil products and destroyed 21 illegal refining sites during the month.

Onoja attributed the gains to intensified military operations, improved intelligence gathering and stronger cooperation with other security agencies.
