The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a precautionary recall of selected batches of Aptamil and Cow & Gate infant formula after concerns about possible contamination with cereulide, a toxin produced by Bacillus cereus.

The recall, initiated by Danone Nutricia, follows the detection of a potential contamination risk.

Cereulide can cause foodborne illness, leading to symptoms such as nausea and severe vomiting, with infants and young children particularly vulnerable to adverse effects on growth and development.

“NAFDAC is notifying the general public, healthcare professionals, caregivers, and all relevant stakeholders about the precautionary recall of Aptamil 1 From Birth First infant milk and Follow-on milk formula by Danone Nutricia due to potential contamination with cereulide,” the regulatory body said in a statement.

“Cereulide is a toxin produced by the bacterium Bacillus cereus, known to cause foodborne illness and may cause symptoms such as nausea and severe vomiting.”

Affected Products

NAFDAC listed affected products, including:

Aptamil 1 First Infant Milk – 700g, 800g, and 1.2kg packs with expiry dates up to December 2026; pre-measured tablet forms with expiry dates up to January 2027.

Aptamil 2 Follow-On Milk – 700g, 800g, and 1.2kg packs with dates through February 2027; pre-measured tablet forms also affected.

Cow & Gate 1 First Infant Milk – 600g, 700g, 800g, and 1.2kg packs, including “Hungry” and Anti-Reflux variants, with expiry dates through February 2027.

NAFDAC said the batches in question were “manufactured in Ireland and Hungary and distributed across the EU, the UK, and third countries.”

It added that the recall does not affect the Aptamil Infant Formulae produced specifically for Nigeria, which comply with Codex standards and are safe for consumption.

“It is important to note the following: Aptamil infant formula and follow-on/growing-up milks are duly registered for the Nigerian market.

“Any product without the underlisted product information and registration number is considered illegal within the Nigerian market.

“Additionally, the company has notified the agency that it has proactively blocked products at the warehouse in Nigeria as a precaution and has begun laboratory analysis. NAFDAC will keep the public updated on developments as necessary regarding these matters.”

Customers are urged to notify the closest NAFDAC office of any suspected availability of unregistered or illegally imported Aptamil infant formula and report adverse events or side effects related to the use of the implicated product to the nearest NAFDAC office.

A batch of tampered SMA Gold

NAFDAC made the public, carers, and healthcare professionals aware earlier this week that a suspected revalidated batch of baby food, SMA Gold First Infant Milk (900g), had been found in Kaduna State.

After consuming the product, a four-month-old baby reportedly experienced gastrointestinal distress, the agency revealed.
