Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri has formally defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress, marking a significant political shift in the North-East state.
The governor announced his decision in a statewide broadcast on Friday, confirming that he had left the Peoples Democratic Party, along with his entire cabinet and all PDP officials in the state. It comes days after President Tinubu visited the state to commission several projects.
In his address, Fintiri framed the move as a strategic decision taken in the broader interest of Adamawa’s development. He said the defection was driven by the need to reposition the state politically and economically, aligning it more closely with the centre of power to accelerate infrastructure development, investment, and social programmes.

According to the governor, the decision was not made lightly but was made after consultations with key stakeholders across the state. By moving with “his entire cabinet and all People’s Democratic Party officials,” Fintiri signalled a coordinated transition rather than an isolated political exit, underscoring the scale and structure of the shift.
He emphasised that his action was “for the developmental interest of the people of Adamawa State,” suggesting that closer collaboration with the ruling party at the federal level would enhance access to resources and policy support. The governor did not indicate any internal crisis within the PDP in Adamawa but presented the defection as a forward-looking move.
