Iraq has announced three days of national mourning following the death of Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
In a statement on Sunday, government spokesperson Bassem al-Awadi expressed condolences to the Iranian people and the wider Muslim world, describing Khamenei’s death as the result of an act of aggression. He also called for an immediate halt to ongoing military operations, warning that the escalation was pushing the region toward unprecedented violence.

Iran maintains strong political and military influence in Iraq, backing several armed groups whose power has expanded over the years.
The Coordination Framework, a coalition of Shiite political groups, also mourned Khamenei’s death, describing him as a leader whose legacy would endure across generations, while condemning those responsible for the attack.
“With deep sorrow and profound grief, we mourn the passing of the martyred leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
“His blood will remain a guiding light for all generations and the curse will continue to haunt the murderous Zionists for all time.”Â
Similarly, influential cleric Moqtada Sadr extended condolences to the Islamic world and announced a separate three-day period of mourning in response to the development.
