Benfica manager José Mourinho has taken a firm stance regarding allegations of racism against his midfielder, Gianluca Prestianni, declaring that the player’s career under him would be “over” if the claims are proven true.
The controversy began following a Champions League play-off match on February 17, when Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior accused Prestianni of racial abuse during the clash in Lisbon.
Mourinho emphasised that such behaviour violates both his personal principles and the values of the club, making it impossible for the player to continue in his squad.
The case is currently being investigated by UEFA, European football’s governing body.
Prestianni, who has denied the accusations, was issued a provisional suspension that kept him out of the second leg of the play-off.
If the investigation finds him guilty of abusing Vinicius, he faces a mandatory minimum ban of 10 matches.
Despite the cloud over the first leg, Real Madrid ultimately progressed to the Champions League last 16 with a 3-1 aggregate victory.

Mourinho’s comments have not been without their own controversy, as the manager previously faced criticism for suggesting that Vinicius’s dancing goal celebration may have provoked the incident.
However, during his most recent address to reporters, he balanced his firm warning with a defence of due process.
He stated that the “presumption of innocence” is a fundamental right, adding that while he must wait for a verdict, he will never be able to view the player the same way if the charges are confirmed.
As the football world awaits UEFA’s final ruling, the situation remains a high-profile test of the sport’s anti-racism protocols.
Mourinho’s ultimatum underscores the severe professional consequences players now face regarding conduct on the pitch.
For now, the “ifs” remain at the forefront of the discussion as investigators review evidence from the match to determine if Prestianni’s career at Benfica has a future or has reached a definitive end.
