A Philippine congressional committee took a decisive step on Wednesday, voting overwhelmingly to advance articles of impeachment against Vice President Sara Duterte.
The 54-1 vote determined that the complaints—which include allegations of graft, corruption, and making a death threat against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr—are “sufficient in substance.”
This move sets the stage for a full House of Representatives vote that could fundamentally alter the country’s political landscape and the 2028 presidential race.
This marks the second attempt to remove the daughter of former President Rodrigo Duterte from office.
While she was impeached last year, the Supreme Court ultimately dismissed that case due to procedural technicalities.

Under the Philippine Constitution, if the House of Representatives successfully impeaches her again, the case moves to a formal trial in the Senate.
A guilty verdict there would not only remove her from the vice presidency but would also result in a lifetime ban from holding any public office.
The escalation comes just weeks after Duterte publicly declared her intention to run for the presidency in 2026.
Once close allies, the relationship between the Duterte and Marcos families has completely fractured, leading to a bitter political rivalry.
The current charges represent a significant threat to her “UniTeam” legacy and her future ambitions, as the Senate trial serves as the final arbiter of her eligibility to remain in Philippine politics.
