The United States Embassy in Nigeria has suspended all visa appointments for Wednesday, March 4, 2026, due to a high risk of volatile protests in the capital, Abuja.

The decision follows the escalating conflict between the United States and Iran, which has sparked international outcry and local demonstrations.

American officials warned that previous gatherings by certain groups in Abuja have led to violent confrontations with Nigerian security forces, prompting an urgent recommendation for U.S. citizens to remain indoors and maintain a low profile.

This security alert coincides with the fifth day of a massive military escalation in the Middle East.

Following reported US and Israeli airstrikes that killed Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Tehran has retaliated with missile strikes against American bases in the Gulf.

The ripples of this confrontation reached Nigeria earlier this week when members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) staged protests in Yobe State, waving Iranian flags and condemning the strikes.

Fearing similar or larger-scale unrest in the Federal Capital Territory, the embassy opted to clear its schedule as a precautionary measure.

While the consular sections in both Abuja and Lagos officially remain open for other business, all visa applicants affected by Wednesday’s cancellation will be contacted to reschedule their appointments.

The State Department has issued a global advisory urging Americans to exercise extreme caution, enrol in traveller tracking programmes, and prepare for potential airspace closures.

Embassy officials continue to monitor local media and have provided emergency contact lines for any citizens requiring immediate assistance during the unfolding crisis.
