Operatives of the Borno State Police Command have apprehended three individuals suspected of phone snatching.
Six mobile phones and a commercial tricycle, which was reportedly used to commit the crimes, were recovered from the suspects in Maiduguri.
The police arrested the suspects near Baga Road in Maiduguri based on credible intelligence on Thursday.
Police operatives, in collaboration with the Borno State Traffic Management Agency (BOTMA) and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), carried out the operation.
The suspects were 19-year-old Muhammed Ali, 20-year-old Alhaji Ahmed, and 23-year-old Umar Alhassan.
According to the police, preliminary investigation showed that the suspects allegedly used the tricycle to target unsuspecting passengers, snatch their mobile phones and flee the scene.
Police recovered six mobile handsets and the tricycle allegedly used in the operation, which are currently in police custody.
The police said the suspects remained in custody as the investigation continued to establish the full extent of their activities and identify possible receivers or other persons connected to the alleged offences.
The Commissioner of Police, Naziru Abdulmajid, commended the personnel and partner agencies involved in the operation.
He also reiterated the Command’s commitment to protecting residents and tackling street-level criminality across the state.
The Command urged residents to remain vigilant, particularly while commuting, and report suspicious activities or incidents promptly to the police and other relevant security agencies.
