International human rights organisation Amnesty International has condemned an alleged police raid on JKD TV Hamada Radio Network in Kaduna State, as well as the arrest of the station’s general manager and a security guard.
In a post shared on X, Amnesty described the arrest as an attack on media freedom.
The rights organisation said heavily armed police officers invaded the station in Millennium City, Kaduna, on Friday and arrested General Manager Charles Abah and a security guard.
According to Amnesty, the police said they had instructions to arrest journalist Zainab Salihu Yabagi over a video explainer produced by JKD Radio and Television concerning Ibrahim Kabir Masari, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Political Affairs.
The Kaduna State Police Command had previously declared Yabagi wanted, Amnesty said.
The organisation condemned what it described as an “unlawful and outrageous invasion” of the station, warning that the incident could further restrict journalists from reporting on issues of public interest.

Amnesty said the raid was part of a broader pattern of attempts to create fear in Nigerian newsrooms and make it harder for journalists to do their work.
“Attacking JKD Radio/Television is part of a wider pattern of attempts to create climate of fear across newsrooms in Nigeria and to make it harder for journalists to do their job,” the organisation said.
It also argued that public officials should remain open to scrutiny and criticism, particularly on matters affecting the public.
“No government official, no matter his status, is above scrutiny and criticism in the interest of the public,” Amnesty said.
The rights organisation described the incident as an abuse of power and said targeting independent media undermines the public’s ability to access fair and objective reporting.
“An attack on the media is an attack on freedom,” it said.
Amnesty called on Nigerian authorities to respect freedom of expression and media freedom and to ensure that journalists are not subjected to reprisals for their reporting or commentary on matters of public interest.
