Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has ordered the nationwide deployment of tactical assets to ensure Muslim faithful observe Eid al-Fitr peacefully, without violence or security threats.

This was announced by the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), Anthony Placid, in a statement shared on Friday morning.

“In furtherance of his commitment to ensuring a safe and secure environment during the festive period, the Inspector-General has directed Commissioners of Police and Tactical Commanders across all states of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory to implement robust security arrangements,” said Placid.

The IGP also instructed the Special Intervention Squad and conventional police personnel to the Eid prayer grounds and critical infrastructure nationwide. According to Placid, there will also be an increased presence of police operatives on highways, motor parks, recreational centres, and other public spaces to ensure peaceful, hitch-free celebrations.

“The IGP has also ordered heightened visibility policing, coordinated patrols, enhanced surveillance operations, and intelligence-led stop-and-search duties. These actions are aimed at proactively deterring criminal activities and ensuring a swift response to any emerging threats,” the spokesperson added.

The IGP also urged members of the public to remain vigilant, cooperate with law enforcement agencies, and promptly report any suspicious activities to the police station nearest to their residence.
