The Syrian military reported on Monday that a base in the northeastern province of Hasakeh was targeted by a missile strike launched from neighbouring Iraq.

An Iraqi official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that a local armed faction fired seven Arash-4 rockets—an advanced variant of the Grad rocket—toward the Rmeilan base near the town of al-Yarubiyah.

While the attack resulted in material damage, no casualties were reported.

Iraqi security forces later discovered an abandoned rocket launcher in the Rabia border region and have launched a search for the perpetrators.

The incident occurred during a period of heightened regional volatility following a massive wave of U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran in late February.

Pro-Tehran armed groups have since increased their activities, claiming responsibility for frequent attacks on regional interests.

The targeted Rmeilan base was recently occupied by the Syrian army following the withdrawal of the U.S.-led international coalition against the Islamic State.

Syrian military officials stated they are coordinating with Baghdad to address the security breach and prevent further cross-border escalations.

Sipan Hamo, Syria’s newly appointed Assistant Minister of Defence for the eastern region, issued a strong condemnation of the strike.

He held Iraqi authorities “fully and directly responsible” for failing to secure their territory and prevent it from being used as a launchpad for attacks that threaten Syrian sovereignty.

This development underscores the ongoing challenge of maintaining border security as Iraq finds itself increasingly drawn into the broader conflict between regional powers and international coalitions.
