Defending champion Jakub Mensik’s title run at the Miami Open ended on Monday after a gruelling 2-hour and 55-minute battle against 19th seed Frances Tiafoe.

In a match defined by high-stakes resilience, Tiafoe secured a 7-6 (7/4), 4-6, 7-6 (13/11) victory under intense afternoon heat at Hard Rock Stadium.

The final set culminated in a marathon tiebreak where Mensik fended off six match points, while Tiafoe saved two himself before finally sealing the win on his seventh opportunity.

Daniil Medvedev, the recent Indian Wells runner-up, was eliminated by Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo in a 6-0, 4-6, 7-5 defeat.

Despite a dominant first set from Cerundolo, Medvedev fought back to force a decider, only to lose the match on a double fault.

Other notable departures from the men’s draw include world number one Carlos Alcaraz, Alex De Minaur, and Ben Shelton, while 31st seed Ugo Humbert progressed after defeating Alexander Shevchenko.

In the women’s draw, American star Coco Gauff overcame a mid-match slump to defeat Sorana Cirstea 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.

Gauff initially led by a set and a break before Cirstea surged back to win five consecutive games and force a third set.

Following a brief medical timeout for a spectator, Gauff reclaimed control to secure her spot in the quarterfinals.

Elsewhere, 13th seed Karolina Muchova dominated her match against Filipina rising star Alex Eala with a swift 6-0, 6-2 win, while unseeded Hailey Baptiste upset Jelena Ostapenko to reach the final eight.
