The Lagos State Government has disbursed a total of N701,054,344.57 to the families of 232 public servants who died in active service.
This gesture took place during a cheque presentation event in Ikeja on Friday, which was organised by the Ministry of Finance in collaboration with LASACO Assurance and a consortium of underwriters and bankers. The insurance death benefits varied, with some families receiving up to N15 million.
The Commissioner for Finance, Abayomi Oluyomi, praised Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his unwavering commitment to the welfare of public servants and their families.
“Let me begin by sincerely appreciating our governor for his consistent support for workers and their families and for championing policies that put people at the centre of government decisions,” he said. Oluyomi also highlighted how the event demonstrated the practical application of the government’s staff welfare policy, ensuring that the families of public servants are not left to struggle in times of loss.
Describing the event as both painful and significant, Oluyomi acknowledged the loss of valuable colleagues while also highlighting the fulfilment of a promise made to their families.
“Today is both a painful and an important day—painful because we remember husbands, wives, fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, and friends who are no longer with us; important because we are here to keep a promise made to them and to you,” he said.
He extended condolences to all 232 families, emphasising that the insurance benefits were more than just numbers; they were a symbol of recognition for the years of loyal service given to the state. Oluyomi assured the public that the administration remains committed to the welfare of public officers and their families, ensuring transparency in processing entitlements. He also urged beneficiaries to use the funds prudently, advising them to consider them a foundation for rebuilding their lives, whether for education, business, or clearing debts.
Mahmud Alao, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance, also addressed the gathering, underlining that the payments were not only a statutory obligation but a moral commitment. “Today’s gathering is both solemn and significant. We are here to honour the memory of our departed colleagues who served with dedication, loyalty, and integrity, and to fulfil a promise made to them and to their families,” Alao said.
He reminded the beneficiaries that, although no financial compensation could replace their loved ones, the insurance scheme was designed to provide support and stability in their time of need.
The Lagos State Government’s insurance scheme aims to ensure that the families of deceased workers receive the support they deserve, even in death, and continues to demonstrate the administration’s dedication to the welfare of its public servants.
