Vaccines, vaccine carriers, and several other medical supplies and facilities were destroyed in a fire outbreak at the Ebonyi Health Cold Store during the early hours of Friday morning.

The state’s health commissioner, Moses Ekuma, disclosed this during a press briefing on Friday.

According to Ekuma, the facilities and medical supplies destroyed in the fire were over N100 million.

“These contained vaccines, vaccine carriers, cold chain boxes, laptops, documents, five refrigerators, two solar refrigerators, 45 solar batteries and inverters. Others include: hospital beds and foams received from the NPHCDA, Abuja, for distribution to Local Government Areas LGAs next week,” said Ekuma.

“In fact, different vaccines like BCG, penta, and the HPV vaccine stored in that cold room were burnt.”

The commissioner added that no casualties were recorded during the fire incident and appreciated the Commissioner for Power and Energy, the fire officers, and the security men for their prompt response.

Frank Oka Ota, a Fire Service official, said he received a distress call at about 5:18 am on Friday.

“We were able to mmobilise our men immediately. We commend the state Governor, Francis Nwifuru for procuring brand new two trucks (appliances) for them which has been helping them,” Oka stated.

Ekuma noted that the exact cause of the fire was still unknown because there had been no public power supply in the state for the past five days.

“The solar, which has been the alternative power supply was not working. Though, we invite the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) officials to restore the light on Thursday,” he explained.
