Students of Ekiti State University (EKSU) in Ado-Ekiti ran for safety late Monday night after gunmen attacked some off-campus hostels.

Witnesses said the armed men entered several hostels and robbed students of their valuables, including mobile phones, laptops and cash.

Many students reportedly left their rooms and hid to avoid being attacked as the gunmen moved from one hostel to another.

A student of the university who uses the X handle @yapperaholicc also shared a post about the incident early Tuesday morning.

In the post made around 3:01 a.m., the student wrote that armed men were attacking students in their hostels at midnight.

The student said the attack happened in the Phase 2 area of the university community and added that similar incidents had happened in the area in recent days.

“We are supposed to be reading for our exams! It has been going on for three days now!!! They are also robbing us. Please help us repost.” the user added.

The spokesperson of the Ekiti State Police Command, Sunday Abutu, confirmed the incident, stating that one suspect has been arrested and is being investigated.

“A suspect has been arrested in connection to the incident, and he is currently undergoing investigation, while necessary measures have been put in place to forestall reoccurrence,”  Abutu said.

Meanwhile, students have called on the Ekiti State Government and security agencies to increase patrols and improve security around hostels near the university.
