Seven people have been injured after a two-storey building under construction collapsed in Jikwoyi, within the Abuja Municipal Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The incident occurred at around 11:00 a.m. on Friday and involved construction workers who were present on site when the structure gave way.

In a statement, the Head of Public Affairs at the FCT Emergency Management Department (FEMD), Nkechi Isa, said rescue efforts were promptly initiated to ensure no one was left trapped beneath the debris.

FEMD’s Search and Rescue Team stated that 17 workers had been on the upper floor at the time of the collapse. Five sustained injuries, while a man at ground level was initially trapped but later rescued.

“All the injured workers, including the rescued victim, have been taken to the Sisters of Nativity Hospital in Jikwoyi and are responding to treatment,” the emergency team said.

Emergency personnel at the scene included officials from FEMD, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Department of Development Control, the Engineering Department of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Federal Fire Service, and the FCT Police Command.

FEMD added that excavation work was ongoing down to ground level to confirm that no individuals remained trapped.

In a separate development, a fire outbreak affected part of a car sales and service centre along the Kubwa Expressway in the Bwari Area Council.

The fire, which started at about 12:00 noon at the Car Earloha Chery Centre near Arab Junction in Kubwa, caused extensive property damage, though no casualties were reported.

According to FEMD’s Head of Search and Rescue, Monday Adie, staff at the facility attempted to put out the fire using extinguishers but were unable to contain it.

However, they succeeded in removing vehicles from the premises to reduce potential losses.

He noted that part of the building within the complex was destroyed, with equipment and documents also lost in the blaze.

Authorities said the fire was caused by an electrical fault.

Emergency teams, including FEMD, the Federal Fire Service, the FCT Fire Service, and the FCT Police Command, responded to the incident.
