Iran carried out the execution of 23-year-old Ali Fahim on Monday, marking the latest in a series of controversial hangings tied to the nationwide protests that erupted earlier this year.

Fahim, convicted for his involvement in an attack on a Revolutionary Guards base in Tehran during the January unrest, was put to death after the supreme court upheld the original verdict.

Fahim was one of seven men sentenced to death in connection with the attack. Rights groups, including Iran Human Rights (IHR), have denounced the verdict, saying that Fahim and his co-defendants were subjected to torture and denied legal representation during their trials.

Despite widespread condemnation, the executions have continued unabated, with four of the seven sentenced to death already executed. Rights groups have expressed concern for the remaining three individuals who now face imminent execution.

At least 192 protesters have been killed in Iran’s biggest movement against the Islamic Republic in more than three years, as warnings grew that authorities were committing a “massacre” to quell the demonstrations. The protests, initially sparked by anger over the rising cost of living, have now become a movement against the theocratic system in place in Iran since the 1979 revolution and have already lasted two weeks. These executions follow a troubling pattern, with Iran Human Rights reporting that, in the past eight days alone, 10 political prisoners have been put to death. This includes executions of individuals associated with the protests, as well as members of the banned People’s Mujahedin (MEK) opposition group.

IHR director Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam stated that these executions reflect Iran’s strategy of survival, as the regime seeks to suppress dissent under the shadow of its conflict with Israel and the United States. He emphasised that the international community must hold the regime accountable for its systematic use of the death penalty, which he views as a tool of repression. He urged global powers to make the regime’s human rights abuses a central condition in any negotiations or dealings with the Islamic Republic.

The recent executions, including that of Fahim, serve as a stark reminder of the brutal crackdown on political dissent in Iran, as authorities continue to target those who challenge the status quo.

Amnesty International has condemned these actions, calling them a form of revenge against individuals pushing for political change and a means of spreading fear throughout the nation.
