The President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, was in the Senegal capital, Dakar, on Wednesday.
Motsepe’s Dakar visit was nearly a month after Senegal and Morocco clashed, following CAP’s stripping of the West African country of its continental football championship title for the 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.
Senegalese footballers briefly left the pitch after a disallowed goal and a penalty awarded to the hosts during the 2026 AFCON final. Morocco, the hosting country, protested Senegal’s win, and the CAF appeal board ruled in Morocco’s favour, noting that Senegal’s staged walk-off contravenes Articles 82 and 84 of the competition regulations on misconduct and forfeiture.

CAF received criticism for crowning Morocco the continental title. The CAF President had announced in March that he would visit Senegal and Morocco to emphasise the importance of “working together to grow African football”.
AFP reported that Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye will receive the CAF President at the presidential palace later on Wednesday, and a press conference will follow afterwards.
The Senegalese football federation rejected CAF’s ruling and appealed the decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). The government also demanded an investigation into the ruling.
Motsepe said in March that he would respect the outcome of the CAS’s decision.
“My personal opinion regarding the matter is irrelevant,” said Motsepe.
