The Israeli military has claimed that the Al Jazeera journalist who was killed on Wednesday in an Israeli strike in Gaza was a Hamas militant who had disguised himself as a journalist.

Israeli forces said it had “struck and eliminated” Mohammed Wishah, whom it described as “a key terrorist in Hamas’ rocket and weapons production headquarters, who had been planning terrorist attacks against IDF soldiers operating in the area”.

It said Wishah had “operated under the guise of an Al Jazeera journalist, exploiting this identity in order to advance terrorist activities against IDF forces and the State of Israel”.

Al Jazeera condemned the killing of the journalist, Wishah, whose vehicle was struck while travelling west of the Gaza Strip. The news channel described Wishah’s killing as a heinous crime and a deliberate crime.

“As Al Jazeera mourns its correspondent Mohammed Wishah, who joined the Network in 2018, it affirms that his killing was not a random act but a deliberate and targeted crime intended to intimidate journalists and prevent them from carrying out their professional duties,” the statement read.

“The Network holds Israeli occupation forces fully responsible for this crime, which is part of a sustained and systematic pattern of incitement and targeting of its journalists, in an effort to silence them and obstruct coverage of ongoing events.”

According to a media rights group, Reporters Without Borders (RSF), which condemned the killing of the Al Jazeera journalist by Israeli forces, Wishah is one of over 220 journalists killed in two and a half years by the Israeli forces in Gaza, at least 70 of whom were killed while discharging their duties.

Violence has continued in the Palestinian territory despite a ceasefire being in effect since October 2025. Israel and Hamas continue to accuse each other of truce violations.

Al Jazeera said Wishah is among 10 of its journalists killed in Gaza since the October 7, 2023, attack on southern Israel by the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas that triggered the Gaza war.

Among them was Mohammad Salama, who was killed in August 2025 before the start of the US-backed ceasefire and has largely halted the war between Israel and Hamas.

Earlier in August 2025, four Al Jazeera staff and two freelancers were killed in an Israeli air strike outside Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City.

Al Jazeera also said it would pursue all necessary legal action to prosecute those responsible for the killing of its correspondents and staff in Gaza, and to seek justice for them and for all fallen journalists.
