No fewer than 12 civilians, including children, were killed in a drone strike, which targeted Kutum in Sudan’s North Darfur on Wednesday.
A medical source who pleaded anonymity for safety reasons told activists on Thursday that six children, including three female secondary school students, were among those killed by the drone strike.
Wednesday’s strike in the paramilitary-controlled town of Kutum came in the wake of an increase in drone attacks by both Sudan’s army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which have been at war since April 2023.
The medical source also added that sixteen others were injured, including women and children. The injured victims are reportedly receiving treatment in a healthcare facility.
According to the El-Fasher Resistance Committee, a pro-democracy group, the strike hit the Al-Salama neighbourhood near Al-Um Girls’ School. The group also blamed the army for the attack.
The United Nations (UN) said drone attacks had killed more than 500 civilians between January and mid-March of 2026. It also warned of the impact of high technology and relatively cheap weapons in populated areas.
Tens of thousands have been killed, with over 11 million people injured in the Sudan conflict, which is nearing its third year. The UN described the conflict as the world’s largest displacement and hunger crisis.
