The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has suspended several senior officers following allegations of extortion along the Lagos-Seme border.
Comptroller General Kemi Nandap ordered the suspension on Friday, after online reports surfaced detailing multiple cases of misconduct involving personnel operating in the area.
The dismissed officers, including Comptrollers in charge of key commands, have been temporarily relieved of their duties pending the outcome of an investigation.
In a statement released by the Service’s spokesperson, Akinsola Akinlabi, the NIS condemned the alleged actions, describing them as a breach of the service core principles.
“The Comptroller-General unequivocally condemns the actions depicted in these reports. Such conduct is unacceptable and stands in direct violation of the core values, ethics, and operational standards of the Service,” the statement read.
The agency confirmed that an investigation has begun to identify all officers involved in the alleged extortion and related misconduct. According to the statement, the disciplinary process will be thorough and swift.

“The CGI has temporarily relieved the Comptrollers in charge of the affected Commands of their duties and has directed a thorough investigation surrounding these incidents. This is to identify all officers involved and ensure that appropriate disciplinary measures are applied with immediate effect,” the NIS said.
The Lagos-Seme border, a gateway between Nigeria and the Republic of Benin, has long been scrutinised for the conduct of security officials. Reports of extortion and harassment have raised issues among travellers and traders who rely on the route for cross-border movement and commerce.
The NIS said it is taking effective steps to strengthen its internal monitoring systems and improve accountability across its operations. The Service emphasised its commitment to upholding professionalism and integrity at all entry and exit points.
The agency also called on members of the public to support its efforts by reporting any incidents of misconduct. Nigerians have been encouraged to use official contact channels, including helplines and social media platforms, to lodge complaints.
