Indonesia’s President Prabowo Subianto will travel to Russia on Sunday for discussions with President Vladimir Putin, with energy and oil cooperation expected to dominate the agenda, according to his office.

Jakarta’s presidency confirmed to AFP that the president will depart Sunday evening, while Foreign Minister Sugiono said the visit would focus on strategic energy concerns and broader geopolitical developments.

“He will meet with President Putin and will also discuss global geopolitics and, certainly, the energy situation,” said Sugiono, who, like many Indonesians, has only one name.

Prabowo has recently defended his extensive foreign engagements, arguing that securing energy resources requires direct engagement with multiple partners abroad.

Indonesia, which relies heavily on subsidised fuel despite being an oil producer, has been affected by rising global energy prices linked to ongoing conflicts, prompting recent domestic measures to conserve fuel supplies.

Last month, the government has introduced temporary fuel rationing and remote work policies for civil servants as part of efforts to manage consumption, while ruling out any immediate increase in fuel prices.

Russia’s ambassador to Indonesia, Sergei Tolchenov, told reporters in March that his country was open to selling oil to Indonesia, while Jakarta has strengthened its global economic ties in recent years through new trade and diplomatic alignments.

“If Indonesia needs it, so please tell us and you will have it,” Tolchenov said as the countries prepared for joint military exercises at a Jakarta port.
