Peruvians are currently awaiting the final results of a turbulent first-round presidential election to determine who will join conservative frontrunner Keiko Fujimori in a June runoff.

With more than half of the ballots processed, Fujimori holds approximately 17 per cent of the vote.

She is the daughter of former president Alberto Fujimori, who died in 2000. She has run on a platform of “restoring order” through harsh measures like military intervention in prisons and mass deportations.

The race for the second runoff spot remains incredibly tight, with several candidates in a statistical tie.

Rafael Lopez Aliaga, a wealthy former Lima mayor known for his aggressive rhetoric and anti-migrant stance, is currently at 14 per cent.

He is closely contested by leftist candidate Roberto Sanchez and others. The counting process is moving slowly, and official results may take several days to finalise, given the volume of votes still outstanding.

The election has been marred by severe logistical failures, leading to a criminal complaint against senior election officials.

Polling stations across the country opened late or failed to open at all, prompting police raids on electoral headquarters and the detention of at least one official.

While authorities have attributed the chaos to “logistical problems,” the Public Prosecutor’s Office is pursuing an investigation into the obstruction of voters’ rights, further straining a nation that has seen eight presidents in a single decade.
