Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov received a formal red-carpet welcome in Beijing on Tuesday, where he held extensive talks with his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi.

A primary outcome of the meeting was the coordination of an upcoming summit between Presidents Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping, scheduled to take place later this year.

The visit underscores the deepening economic and political alliance between the two nations, a partnership that has strengthened significantly since 2022.

During the discussions, Lavrov sharply criticised Western efforts to “contain” Russia and China through the creation of exclusive, bloc-based security structures in the Asia-Pacific region.

He warned of “dangerous games” involving geopolitical hotspots such as Taiwan and the South China Sea, accusing the United States and its allies of attempting to dismantle regional cooperation.

Wang Yi echoed these sentiments, noting that their mutual support on the international stage demonstrates a shared responsibility during times of global change.

The diplomatic session also addressed broader international crises, including the ongoing conflict involving the U.S. and Iran and the situation in Ukraine.

Both ministers agreed to continue working together to de-escalate tensions in the Middle East.

This meeting coincided with Beijing hosting several other world leaders, as China seeks to position itself as a constructive mediator in restoring stability to the Gulf region and navigating the economic fallout of current global conflicts.
