Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia announced on Sunday that all passengers abducted from a bus in the state last Wednesday have been successfully rescued.

While initial police reports indicated that 14 people were taken, the governor cited a total of 15 survivors during his press briefing.

The rescue marks a significant breakthrough following a recent spike in mass abductions across the northern and central regions of Nigeria.

Law enforcement officials confirmed that seven suspects have been taken into custody in connection with the attack.

These kidnappings are typically orchestrated by armed criminal groups, often referred to locally as “bandits,” who seize victims for ransom, as well as by various extremist organisations operating in the area.

The incident occurred in a region frequently troubled by long-standing disputes between herding and farming communities over land and resources.

Despite these underlying tensions, the successful recovery of the victims has been welcomed as a rare positive outcome in Nigeria’s ongoing struggle to curb the surge of kidnappings and improve regional security.
