President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to deepening economic relations with the United Kingdom, with particular focus on aviation and broader areas of mutual benefit.

A statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said the President gave the assurance while receiving a delegation from British Airways led by the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr Richard Montgomery, and the airline’s Commercial Officer, Colm Lacy, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Tinubu described the long-standing relationship between both countries as one that has evolved significantly over the past nine decades and remains worth celebrating.

He also recalled his recent visit to the United Kingdom, noting that he appreciated the warm reception he received from King Charles III, which he said was a memorable experience.

The President further reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to sustaining bilateral ties with the United Kingdom and strengthening cooperation built over generations, stressing that the current administration intends to continue the legacy of partnership established by previous leaders.

Tinubu said ongoing reforms in the aviation sector and the wider economy are designed to align Nigeria with global standards, improve connectivity, and encourage trade, investment, and people-to-people exchange.

“Nigeria is still going through the reforms and transformation of our aviation industry and every aspect of our economy. We must meet global standards and encourage people-to-people connections while promoting the essence of trade and partnership in this sector.”

He also acknowledged British Airways’ long presence in Nigeria, describing its operations as an important part of the economic and social link between both countries, and expressed optimism about further strengthening the partnership.

The President added that his administration had taken steps to address long-standing financial and operational challenges affecting foreign airlines, noting that relevant agencies, including the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), were working to resolve outstanding issues.

British Airways Commercial Officer Colm Lacy described Nigeria as a key and long-standing market for the airline, noting that its operations over the decades have supported business, education, tourism, and investment flows between the two countries.

“Our relationship began in 1936 and has journeyed across generations. Nigeria is not simply a destination but a long-standing, most valued market.”

He added, “Every day our services support Nigerian entrepreneurs, students, families and tourists, helping in trade, investment and opportunities in both directions.”

He also said improvements in the operating environment for foreign carriers and commended recent engagements with Nigerian authorities.

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo said the airline had upgraded its fleet on the London-Nigeria route and had complied with government policies, including local catering requirements for outbound international flights.

The British High Commissioner, Dr Richard Montgomery, also expressed satisfaction with bilateral relations, noting that recent high-level engagements between both countries had resulted in significant agreements, including initiatives linked to port rehabilitation in Lagos.
