As artificial intelligence continues to reshape industries and communication, authenticity has become more important than ever in building and protecting reputations, as the rise of AI-generated content and misinformation has made it harder for people to trust what they see online.

Speaking at the Global Reputation Forum during an interview with News Central TV Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief, Kayode Akintemi, Mark Bowater, Global Partnerships Manager at Integrity Music UK, stressed that authenticity is now the ultimate currency. He said that the growing dissemination of synthetic content online is making it increasingly difficult for people to trust what they see on digital platforms.

“I think it’s never been harder to build and protect your reputation than right now,” Bowater said.

He stated that AI will fundamentally transform politics, media, government communication, and the creative industry, warning that the growing amount of synthetic content online shows a major challenge.

“The amount of synthetic content produced online increased by 900%, and that’s only going to increase now,” he stated.

The Global Partnerships Manager explained that authenticity will differentiate brands, musicians, media personalities, and business leaders from others in a large, crowded digital space.

“It’s not just telling people things, it’s showing up, it’s being in person. Don’t waste time introducing yourself… hit them with the key message up front, then layer your story after that,” he advised.

According to Bowater, physical events and face-to-face interactions are increasingly becoming more valuable as trust in online content declines.

“When you can’t trust what you’re seeing online, getting together and seeing people in the flesh and making a personal connection becomes even more important,” he said.

He also stressed the importance of capturing people’s attention quickly, especially in today’s fast-paced media environment.

“When you get a chance to get in front of people, you have to deliver your message immediately. Don’t waste time talking about your CV, we have to go the extra yard to earn the attention, to gain the reputation, and to protect our reputations nowadays,” he stated.

Furthermore, he urged professionals in media, music, and business to be engaging, relatable, and intentional to earn audience trust and protect their authentic reputations in the AI-driven era.
