The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has said that 69 people have died on roads across the state in the first quarter of 2026.
The agency also said that 246 others sustained different degrees of injuries in road accidents during the same period. The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, revealed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Sunday, April 26, in Lagos.
Bakare-Oki said the authority cleared over 600 accident scenes during Q1. He said LASTMA resolved over 900 infractions involving trucks and other articulated vehicles while also carrying out 4,900 physical enforcement operations.
The GM stated that the agency recorded about 17,942 offences through technology-driven enforcement, including the use of Traffic Management Solution devices.

According to him, LASTMA maintains zero tolerance for traffic infractions and impounded vehicles would be promptly charged before the Lagos State Mobile Court.
“For the first quarter, we have been able to improve on our service delivery, especially ensuring significant improvement in the travel time of Lagos residents,” he said.
“We have carried out a total overhaul of all traffic equipment and recovery vehicles, ensuring they are strategically repositioned to improve our response time to traffic incident management.
“In terms of personnel, we have also embarked on training and reorientation for better service delivery.”
Bakare-Oki went further to disclose that the agency had developed a year-long training calendar detailing how personnel would be trained from January to December 2026.
“We are planning to train over 1,000 of our officers, and we have already started both internal and external training. We have engaged various consultants for external training. As the months unfold, we will roll out and actively engage in high-level capacity-building programmes for all our staff,” he said.
