Spanish police on Wednesday said they have arrested a young man accused of producing counterfeit euro banknotes at his home and distributing them across Europe, with Germany listed among the main destinations.
The suspect was arrested in the southern city of Malaga following an investigation that began in October after Austrian authorities alerted Spanish police to purchases of fake currency on the dark web using cryptocurrency.
Investigators later traced more than 500 parcels containing counterfeit banknotes that had been sent from post offices in Malaga to several European countries using false sender identities, police said.
During a raid on the suspect’s home, officers reportedly found a fully equipped counterfeit laboratory containing printing machines, holographic materials and tools used to reproduce 20, 50 and 100 euro notes.
Authorities also seized about 28,350 euros ($32,800) in fake currency during the operation, which was carried out with support from the European Union law enforcement agency Europol.
