China has granted zero tariffs on imports from 53 African countries with which it has diplomatic relations, effective from Friday.
The development is intended to allow the export of quality products from Africa to the Chinese market and will be in place until April 30, 2028. The move is also expected to cover market access, inspection and quarantine procedures, and customs clearance to boost trade in goods, improve skills and technical training.
China had earlier announced plans to begin implementing a zero-tariff scheme for 53 African countries, including Nigeria, under the Changsha Declaration, a move intended to deepen economic cooperation within the framework of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).
China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the country will collaborate with Africa to support the African Union’s Agenda 2063, focusing on modernisation and sustainable development. Africa’s exports to China are dominated by minerals and raw materials, such as crude oil and metallic ores.
