The Nigerian relay team has earned two more spots at the 2027 World Athletics Championships in Beijing, bringing its total qualification tally at the 2026 World Athletics Relays in Botswana to three out of a possible six tickets.

The quartet of Samson Nathaniel, Taiwo Kudoro, Chidi Okezie, and Patience Okon-George delivered a season’s best of 3:12.88 contested in the mixed 4x400m relay, where they finished second in their heat.

Their performance in the tournament secured Nigeria a place at the 2027 global championships. Nigeria also secured a qualification when the quartet of Chigozie Rosemary, Obi Jennifer Chukwuka, Maria Thompson, and Miracle Ezechukwu clocked a time of 42.94s to finish 2nd in the women’s 4×100m category.

The team of Rosemary Chigozie Nwankwo, Jennifer Chukwuka-Obi, Maria Omokwe Thompson, and Miracle Oluebube Ezechukwu, who had earlier experienced a baton mishap in their earlier heat, bounced back impressively in the repechage round and secured a qualification. The team clocked 42.94 seconds to finish second, narrowly behind France (42.93s), but did enough to clinch Nigeria’s third qualification in the global championships.

The men’s 4x100m relay team, however, had their hopes dashed after a baton mishap ended their qualification bid at a crucial stage.
