Operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) have apprehended the driver of a truck who was involved in a fatal road crash that claimed the lives of a pedestrian and a motorcyclist along Iyana-Iba inward the main gate of Lagos State University (LASU) on the main carriageway of the Badagry Expressway.

Adebayo Taofiq, the Director of the Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA, in a statement shared on X on Sunday, revealed that the truck was travelling at a top speed from Volkswagen inward Badagry when the driver knocked down a pedestrian.

According to Taofiq, the truck driver continued moving along the corridor rather than bringing the vehicle to a halt.

A motorcyclist and a sympathiser pursued the truck in an attempt to intercept it and compel the driver to face the consequences of his actions. The motorcyclist was rammed into by the fleeing driver, leading to his death.

Taofiq said the sympathiser who accompanied the motorcyclist escaped unhurt, and operatives of the LASTMA Night Gang Surveillance and Monitoring Patrol Team evacuated the remains of the motorcyclist.

“Operatives of the LASTMA Night Gang Surveillance and Monitoring Patrol Team, who were strategically deployed along the Badagry Expressway corridor for routine all-night traffic monitoring and emergency response operations, swiftly arrived at the scene and undertook the painstaking evacuation of the deceased motorcyclist whose body had become trapped beneath the front wheel tyre of the bucket truck,” said Taofiq.

He added that LASTMA officials apprehended the truck driver and subsequently handed him over to security operatives attached to the PPL Police Post in Okokomaiko, alongside officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps Accident and Emergency Response Team for further investigation and necessary legal procedures.

The corpse of the pedestrian, who was killed by the truck, was handed over to his grieving relatives, who later arrived at the accident scene.
