What began as a small Saturday morning gathering of four friends has blossomed into “We Run Nairobi,” the city’s largest free fitness community.

Founded in 2022 by lawyer and marathoner Emily Chepkor, the club has transformed the city’s social landscape, encouraging residents to swap late-night parties for early-morning miles.

Today, hundreds of runners gather weekly at Riverside Square, creating a vibrant outdoor community that challenges the intimidating atmosphere and high costs of traditional gyms.

The club’s rise coincides with a growing health consciousness in Kenya, where non-communicable diseases now account for nearly half of all hospital admissions.

Chepkor has opened up the world of fitness to a wide-ranging crowd, from young professionals to students, who enjoy the group’s intentional structure and supportive environment without the membership fees.

This grassroots movement has even caught the attention of global brands like Swiss sportswear company On, leading to high-profile partnerships and large-scale lifestyle events.

For Chepkor, the club was born out of a personal need for consistency during a difficult career transition.

Despite the initial financial strain of self-funding the initiative, she has successfully built a sustainable business model through corporate sponsorships while maintaining the core mission of free participation.

As requests pour in to expand the model across Kenya, “We Run Nairobi” continues to prove that the city’s “good time” culture can be redefined through sober, joyous movement and community networking.
