Chinese President Xi Jinping has warned United States (US) President Donald Trump that wrong decisions over Taiwan could lead to conflict between the two countries.
The warning came on Thursday as the two leaders met in Beijing for a major summit focused on trade, security, and global tensions.
Speaking at the opening of the talks, Xi described Taiwan as the most sensitive issue in China-US relations.
“The Taiwan question is the most important issue in China-US relations,” Xi said.
He warned that if the issue is “mishandled”, both countries could “collide or even come into conflict”.
Trump arrived in Beijing earlier this week and was greeted with a grand welcome at the Great Hall of the People. He praised Xi as a “great leader” and said he believed relations between the two countries could improve. The summit marks the first visit by a US president to China in nearly 10 years.

Aside from Taiwan, both leaders are discussing trade tensions, artificial intelligence, rare-earth exports, and the ongoing war in Iran.
Taiwan remains a major source of disagreement between China and the United States. China considers Taiwan part of its territory and has not ruled out using force to take control of the island. The US, while recognising Beijing officially, continues to support Taiwan with weapons.
Trump also said he planned to discuss US arms sales to Taiwan with Xi, a move that has raised concerns in Beijing. Business leaders, including Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Nvidia boss Jensen Huang, were also part of the US delegation during the summit.
