Russia has launched a massive aerial attack on the Ukrainian capital Kyiv and several other regions, officials said on Thursday, killing at least one person and wounding dozens.
The attack came hours after Moscow on Wednesday unleashed hundreds of drones in a daytime assault that killed six people, marking the first combined missile and drone barrage since the end of a brief US-brokered ceasefire.
Kyiv-area officials reported one person killed and several dozen wounded in the overnight strike, which Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko said targeted civilian infrastructure and residential buildings.
State Emergency Service posted images showing rescuers digging through the rubble of a collapsed apartment building in search of survivors.
Mayor of Kyiv, Vitalii Klitschko, also said 11 people had already been rescued. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stated the attack during U.S. President Donald Trump’s visit to China showed Russia wants to continue fighting despite a peace push by Washington.
“There should be no illusions or wishful thinking: only pressure on Moscow can force him to stop,” he wrote on X.
“I am certain that the leaders of the United States and China have enough leverage over Moscow to tell Putin to finally end the war.”
Thursday’s overnight strike also targeted railway infrastructure and ports in the southern Odesa region, said Deputy Prime Minister Oleksiy Kuleba.
The Ukrainian Air Force said Russia’s barrage included 675 drones and 56 missiles, most of which were downed by air defences. So far, it has recorded 38 hits across 24 locations.
The Russia-Ukraine war has entered its fifth year despite US-backed peace efforts that have made little progress and delivered few results.
