Troops of the 6 Brigade Nigerian Army stationed at the Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Wukari have arrested a 51-year-old man over an alleged recruitment scam.

The suspect, identified as Felix Yadeh, was apprehended by members of a local vigilante group in Bantaje Village, Wukari Local Government Area of Taraba State.

Preliminary investigations showed that the suspect allegedly collected ₦3,627,000 from members of the public by falsely promising to secure recruitment slots into the Nigerian Army.

In a statement issued by the 6 Brigade Nigerian Army Public Relations Officer, Lieutenant Umar Muhammad, the Army said the suspect confessed during interrogation that his younger brother instructed him to collect money from victims as supposed recruitment fees for enlistment into the Army.

Troops recovered one Infinix Android mobile phone and ₦3,050 in cash from the suspect.

The Nigerian Army said it had taken the suspect and the recovered items into custody for further investigation to uncover the full extent of the alleged fraud and identify possible accomplices.

The Commander of the 6 Brigade, Nigerian Army/Sector 3, Operation Whirl Stroke, Brigadier General Chukwuemeka Michael Akaliro, commended the troops and local vigilante members for their vigilance and swift action, which led to the arrest.

He warned the public against dealing with individuals who claim they can facilitate recruitment into the Nigerian Army in exchange for money.

The Brigade stressed that recruitment into the Nigerian Army remains free, transparent and strictly merit-based.

It also urged members of the public to report suspicious activities involving recruitment scams, impersonation or extortion to security agencies.
