Senegal has dismissed head coach Pape Thiaw following the team’s elimination from the World Cup, with the Senegal Football Federation (FSF) announcing on Sunday that the decision was reached after a meeting of its executive committee.
“Following a meeting of the (FSF) executive committee, it was decided to initiate proceedings to relieve national team coach Pape Thiaw, as well as the entire coaching staff, of their duties,” the federation said.
The federation added that its president, Abdoulaye Fall, will address the media on Monday to explain the reasons behind the decision and outline the team’s future direction.
Thiaw, 45, a former Senegal international, took charge of the national team in 2024 and guided the Lions of Teranga through a mixed campaign at the World Cup.

Senegal struggled during the group stage, suffering defeats to France and Norway before recovering with a commanding 5-0 victory over Iraq to secure qualification for the knockout rounds.
Their tournament ended in dramatic fashion in the last-32 stage, where they were beaten 3-2 by Belgium after extra time. Senegal had appeared on course for victory after taking a 2-0 lead, but Belgium scored twice late in the match before completing the comeback in extra time.
The decision comes despite Thiaw’s success earlier in his tenure. Under his leadership, Senegal won the Africa Cup of Nations final in January. However, the team was later stripped of the title as punishment after players walked off the pitch during a chaotic final against Morocco.
The FSF is now expected to begin the search for a new coaching team as Senegal looks to rebuild ahead of upcoming international competitions.
