President Bola Tinubu has commended the Nigerian Navy for its role in securing the country’s territorial waters, saying the force has helped eliminate piracy and reduce crude oil theft.
He made the remarks on Monday at the launch of the Nigerian Navy International Fleet Review held at the Eko Atlantic Waterfront in Lagos. The event marks the Navy’s 70th anniversary celebrations, commemorating its establishment on June 1, 1956.
Tinubu praised the Navy’s modern operations and surveillance systems, saying they have strengthened maritime security and protected coastal communities.
“Through effective integration of surveillance, rapid response mechanisms, and operations, you have successfully eradicated piracy in our waters and significantly curtailed crude oil theft and associated maritime crime,” the President said.

He added that these efforts have supported economic growth and strengthened Nigeria’s blue economy. The President also expressed confidence that the Navy will continue to secure the nation’s maritime environment.
The event featured the commissioning of three naval vessels, NNS Mambila, NNS Gurara, and NNS Oloibiri, as well as a presidential trooping parade and presentation of new colours.
Also, Tinubu highlighted the Navy’s role in internal security operations, especially counter-terrorism efforts.
“The courage and professionalism demonstrated by the Special Boat Services in executing complex missions are truly commendable,” he said.
He urged naval officers to maintain high standards of professionalism and continue improving operational capacity. Reflecting on the Navy’s 70-year journey, Tinubu said the force has grown into a strong and modern naval power.
“The Nigerian Navy has reached a pinnacle of continental leadership… emerging as the most formidable naval force in Africa,” he stated.
