A severe tropical storm swept across southwestern Japan on Tuesday, injuring nine people, cutting power to thousands of homes, and disrupting air travel.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) warned of high waves, flooding and possible landslides as Tropical Storm Jangmi, which has been downgraded from a typhoon, continued moving northward after passing near Okinawa on Monday.

More than 30,000 households in Kagoshima Prefecture and another 17,000 in Okinawa were without electricity on Tuesday morning.

Top government spokesman Minoru Kihara said nine people had been injured in Okinawa as a result of the storm.

According to public broadcaster NHK, some of the injuries occurred when strong winds blew objects into vehicles, while others were caused by people losing their balance in the gusty conditions.

Kihara also cautioned that public transportation services in Tokyo and surrounding areas could face disruptions on Wednesday as the storm approaches the region. He urged residents in affected areas to closely follow evacuation advisories issued by local authorities and consider leaving vulnerable locations early, stressing the importance of taking precautions to ensure personal safety.

“For those of you who are living in areas likely to be affected by the storm, please pay close attention to evacuation information issued by your municipalities, and stay mindful of early evacuation,” Kihara told a news conference.

Japan’s two largest airlines, All Nippon Airways and Japan Airlines, cancelled a combined 600 flights scheduled between Monday and Wednesday due to the storm.
