Doctors at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owo, and its Akure Annex have commenced a 72-hour warning strike following the alleged assault of a medical doctor by a patient’s relative within the hospital premises on Sunday.
The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), FMC Owo, declared the industrial action after an on-duty doctor was reportedly attacked while attending to patients.
According to reports, the wife of a patient assaulted the doctor while he was carrying out his duties at the hospital.

The situation reportedly escalated when some individuals later entered the facility in search of the doctor, prompting hospital staff to move him to a secure location within the premises.
In a communiqué signed by the association’s President, Dr Adeola Oluwadamilola, and Secretary-General, Dr Dare Aderemi, the doctors described the incident as another example of the increasing violence healthcare workers face while performing their responsibilities.
The association alleged that the doctor suffered a physical assault at the hands of a patient and the patient’s daughter, adding that the incident marked the second attack on a doctor at the institution this year.
In response, the doctors outlined several demands, including the immediate arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the attack, the deployment of armed security personnel to FMC Owo and its annexes, a public apology by the alleged assailant in a national newspaper, and adequate compensation for the affected doctor.
