The Nigerian wrestling team won three medals at the ongoing Ulaanbaatar 2026 United World Wrestling (UWW) Third Ranking Series in Mongolia on Saturday.

Nigeria’s medal haul comprised one silver and two bronze medals, with Hannah Ojo, Esther Kolawole and Christianah Ogunsanya finishing on the podium in their respective categories.

The championship offers athletes valuable ranking points that contribute to seeding for upcoming global competitions.

Ojo delivered a dominant performance in her opening bout, defeating Mongolia’s Tuvshinjargal Tarav 10-0 before overcoming India’s Priya 5-1 in the semi-finals.

However, the reigning African champion’s impressive run ended in the final, where she lost 8-0 to India’s Kajal and settled for the silver medal.

Kolawole claimed bronze after overpowering China’s Huan Yang 10-0. Earlier in the competition, she recorded a notable 6-0 victory over Russia’s world number one, Amina Tandelova, to reach the bronze-medal match.

Her only defeat came in a closely contested 5-4 bout against North Korea’s world silver medallist, Kim Ok-ju.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Team Nigeria finished the Ranking Series tournament with three medals from four athletes.

The Nigerian contingent comprised Mercy Genesis (50kg), Christianah Ogunsanya (53kg), Esther Kolawole (62kg) and Hannah Ojo (76kg).

The Ulaanbaatar Open, the third of four UWW Ranking Series events this year, is an annual competition on the international wrestling calendar. The tournament, which began on June 4, concluded on Saturday in Mongolia.
